Satu Kankaanpää
Satu Kankaanpää is a student of Cultural Manager at Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences. She is also an artist. Satu is deaf poet and has a background as a photographer. She is no stranger to dance, having practised oriental dance, Latin dance, burlesque, etc.
It all started when she performed as a poet at the Disability Day Art & Action (DiDa) festival before she started her studies. Since then, she became interested in art and culture production, especially with accessibility in mind. The phrase may be worn, but ”Culture belongs to everyone” is an important motto for Satu. Since her production internship during her studies at DiDa Festival 2022, equality and accessibility for disabled and sign language artists in the art fields has become increasingly important for him.
During her production internship at the Outsider Art Festival (OAF) 2024, Satu saw inclusive curating in practice in an artistic working group with outsider artists as curators and art ”insiders” as mentors, and experienced an epiphany. Power shifted to the artists and multiple perspectives emerged during the inclusive curation process. Giving space and being open to marginal art can create something new and fascinating.
